“YOU HAVE TO MAKE COMING BACK TO THE OFFICE WORTH IT!”

Discover how Jieh Greeney, former VP of Retail at Food52, brings employees back to the office with intentionality.

Meet Jieh Greeney, VP of Retail at Food52. Jieh is committed to fostering a collaborative environment, emphasizing the significance of culture, leadership, and developing intentional strategies for bringing people together.

What are the essential ingredients for creating a workplace where employees are empowered and motivated to contribute? It all starts with people - leadership that's present and inspirational, and colleagues who are supportive and collaborative. Cultivating a collaborative culture with psychological safety and diversity of thought is absolutely crucial.

What specific strategies do you use to build that community? Open-door policies, celebrating milestones, acknowledging work-life balance, and providing clarity on roles and goals are key. I really try to emphasize supporting employees beyond their work duties and embracing their authentic selves - people are more than just what they do at work.

What’s your advice for companies that are struggling to bring employees back to office? It requires intentionality and planning, not just flexible policies.  That means prioritizing team collaboration time, informal and formal opportunities to connect with colleagues across teams and levels, creating a strong foundation for more effective hybrid work. What’s the point of bringing people back to the office if all their meetings are still over Zoom?

Why do you believe so strongly in giving your team lunch everyday? It’s more than just a free lunch - it’s a daily moment of connection and team cohesion. We dine together with real plates and cutlery, instead of all the disposable stuff, to add intentionality to the meal and enhance the overall experience. Lunch with the team is such an important part of the day, and I always look forward to it!

What’s your go-to pick-me-up at work? The Pain d’Avignon Cafe's sea salt chocolate chip cookie is irresistible! I just can’t help myself when I see it.

“Returning to the office should be about fostering genuine connections, creativity, collaboration and culture.”

As workplaces evolve, the importance of intentional strategies to foster collaboration and connection becomes increasingly evident. Through thoughtful approaches, such as prioritizing shared meals and creating spaces for authentic interactions, Jieh cultivates an environment employees want to return to - and with the same mindset, other leaders can too.
